Homeopathic Medicine is a therapeutic modality that has its origins in the 18th and 19th centuries, created by the German physician Samuel Hahneman (1755-1843). Hahneman believed that treating a patient with an extremely dilute preparation of a substance, which in a healthy person causes symptoms similar to ones suffered by the patient, brought about improvement in the symptoms and a cure of the illness in the sick patient.

Homeopathic remedies are prepared by serial dilution of the substance and by mixing it with a method known as succussion. Homeopathic remedies are present in such extremely dilute amounts that they have no pharmacologic (or drug like)

effect and, therefore, cannot do harm. They may be administered as small pellets taken under the tongue, as liquid solutions or sprays, and as sterile injectable solutions. One of the theories as to why homeopathy works is that it sends subtle but powerful messages to the immune system, thereby increasing the patient’s ability to fight off the illness and heal. Classical homeopathic physicians arrive at remedies after careful interviews with patients, which take into account the patient’s basic constitution, and both physical and psychoemotional symptoms. Homeopathic remedies are easily administered, generally well tolerated, safe, and in my experience, often very helpful.

Complex homeopathy, considered a non-classical use of homeopathic remedies, involves the use of several remedies at the same time in the same preparation. It was pioneered by Hans Heinrich Reckeweg, a 20th century physician who founded the companies Heel and BHI. He used complex homeopathic remedies in a system known as Homotoxicology, which is concerned with reversing the toxic effects of substances that have interfered with our body’s ability to maintain homeostasis.

Bach Flower Remedies is another form of homeopathic treatment. The remedies were developed by Dr. Edward Bach, an English physician and homeopath, in the 1930s from plants and flowers of his native English countryside. He diluted flower material in a solution of water and brandy. He claimed the remedies contained the “energetic signature” of the flower and that signature can be transmitted to the patient. These remedies are used primarily for emotional and spiritual conditions, such as depression, anxiety, insomnia, and stress.

I employ any and all of these homeopathic methods when they are indicated and when the patient wishes to use homeopathic remedies for their treatment.
