Herbal
medicines are the origin of the Western system of pharmaceuticals. Common
drugs like aspirin are derived from botanical substances; in the case of
aspirin, from willow bark and digitalis from foxglove. Before the advent of
the modern era, herbs were widely used for their healing properties. In many
parts of the world this is still the case. It
is important to realize that everything we ingest has some effect on the body
and its delicately balanced systems. When considering the use of herbals for
health, be aware that herbals, while from a natural source, can still have
side effects and interactions with other herbals or with prescribed
medications. Herbals must be prepared in a safe environment to avoid
contamination and to maintain their potency. If you are considering the use
of herbals, consult with a provider knowledgeable in the use of herbal
remedies to help ensure their safe use. |
