I am board certified in both Family Practice and Medical Acupuncture. I graduated in 1979 from the University of Kansas School of Medicine and did my Family Medicine Residency at Saint Francis Hospital in Wichita, Kansas. After completing my residency and passing the examination of the American Board of Family Medicine, I was in private practice at the Agape Family Health Center in Dubois, Pennsylvania, from 1982 until 1990. During that time I worked extensively in all aspects of family medicine, including obstetrics and pediatrics, as well as adult medicine, and I began yearly medical mission work in rural Jamaica. It was this work that prompted me to move to Washington, D.C. in 1990, where I worked for Healthcare for the Homeless, Inc. (HCH). During my tenure with HCH, I established the clinic at the House of Ruth in Northeast Washington, serving the healthcare needs of homeless women.

I served as faculty of the Family Medicine Residency Program for Georgetown University Medical School and was in charge of the obstetrics and gynecology portion of the resident’s curriculum. I spearheaded an innovative program to develop a prenatal care program for homeless women at both the House of Ruth and the Community of Hope, a transitional housing program for homeless families in Northwest Washington. Under my tutelage, the family medicine residents provided prenatal care for homeless women and delivered their babies at Providence Hospital in Northeast Washington. I continued to work as an Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at the Georgetown University School of Medicine until 1998.

In 1998, I joined Kaiser Permanente and in 1999 I began the study of Medical Acupuncture at the UCLA Acupuncture for Physicians course, taught by the eminent Joseph M. Helms, MD, the father of the discipline of Medical Acupuncture in the U.S. I passed the board examination in Medical Acupuncture in 2002 and have remained a diplomate of the American Board of Medical Acupuncture and a member of the American Board of Medical Acupuncture.

During my time at Kaiser Permanente, I worked in several areas, including Family Medicine, Addiction Medicine, and as coordinator of the Chronic Pain program in the suburban Maryland Region. For the last several years I worked for Kaiser Permanente, I was part of the Department of Complementary and Alternative Medicine, where I treated patients with Medical Acupuncture and both Chinese and Western Herbal Medicines. In 2006, I entered private practice again and worked as a physician at Steinmetz Medical Associates in Alexandria, VA, where I remained until July of 2008.

In recent years, I have expanded my clinical skills. I have concentrated my work in the areas of individualized care of patients with hypothyroidism, adrenal stress and fatigue, and hormone imbalance. I enjoy working with patients in a holistic and alternative way, including those whose needs have not been fully addressed in a traditional medical setting. I continue an active an avid interest in Medical Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine and utilize these modalities to help patients alleviate the symptoms of a variety of medical and chronically painful conditions. I enjoy working with patients who desire to look at their needs in a broad, holistic way and strive to individualize care rather than work with protocols that have not resulted in optimal health or symptom control for my patients.

I have an interest in the use of Homeopathic medicines, Bach Flower Remedies, and other modalities that recognize the interconnectedness of body, mind, psyche, and spirit in healing. I am currently studying Homeopathic Medicine with the British Institute of Homeopathy. I regularly use both simple and complex homeopathic remedies, as well as traditional allopathic medicine and Chinese herbal medicine in the care of my patients. I enjoy working with practitioners of other disciplines, such as Naturopathy, Osteopathy, Cranioscral therapy, Biofeedback, and Psychotherapy to maximize the patient’s experience of healing. I recognize that my allopathic training, while enormously valuable, is not the whole answer for many people and I seek to integrate my care with those whose skills complement my own for the benefit and wellbeing of my patients on their journey to wholeness.

I have a wide variety of other talents and interests, which round me out as a person. I am a musician; I played the flute for many years and I recently began studying the cello. I am also a potter, a stained glass artist, and an accomplished needlewoman. I am a certified Reiki Master and have taught Reiki with my teacher, David Gleekel in Gaithersburg, MD. I am active in the healing Ministry at my church, St. Columba’s Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C. I am married to a wonderful and talented violinist, Peter Clamp, and make my home with him, Rosa, and Maggie (the cats), and a tankful of tropical fish (all of whom have names and personalities) in Bethesda, Maryland.
