The
oath of Hippocrates, which physicians take upon their graduation and
admittance into the practice of medicine, basically states that the physician
is bound to honor and respect her teachers and she promises to hand on to
others what she has learned. The physician must always respect those who have
need of her care and always regard the patient’s welfare as a primary goal
and responsibility. The physician further promises never to do harm or
injustice to those she cares for. I
take these promises very seriously and do my best to listen carefully and
treat each of my patients as an individual, whose needs are as unique as they
are. As a family physician, I was trained broadly in obstetrics, gynecology,
pediatrics, adult internal medicine, surgery, psychiatry, and community
medicine. I soon learned that people are much more complex and varied than
the concepts I had studied. What I have come to understand after many years
of practice and accompanying many people along their journey, is that no one
answer is right for everyone. People need to be understood as individuals, in
the context of not only their biology, but their intellectual, emotional, and
spiritual selves, as well. In fact, those other parts of a patient often have
more to do with their state of health or illness than their biology does. I
deeply respect and appreciate my training in allopathic medicine. I also
believe that other healing traditions are equally valid and have helped
countless numbers of people through the ages, often when traditional
allopathic medicine has not. Often the concepts of other traditions seem
strange or foreign because of differences in language and paradigms of
belief. They are only different ways of understanding and describing the
phenomena of health or illness and in my experience are very internally
consistent and valid. While
I do not have experience of all of these different systems, I have had
training in medical acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, Western herbal
medicine, and homeopathy. I have personal experience of the value of various
kinds of body work, including osteopathy, craniosacral therapy, and various
energetic techniques, such as Reiki and healing touch. I strive to use all
areas of my training and experience to help patients to reach their goals for
health and well-being. |
